If Butterfly was jazz-inflected, soul-funk vibrance, DAMN. is a grab-you-by-the-throat declaration that’s as blunt, complex, and unflinching as the name suggests. The gunshot that abruptly ends the track is a signal: DAMN. opens with a seemingly innocuous line-"So I was taking a walk the other day…”-we're all ears. Kendrick would later confirm that the special collector’s edition would be releasing on December 8, two days after the album’s supposed announcement through Twitter.In the two years since To Pimp a Butterfly, we’ve hung on Kendrick Lamar's every word-whether he’s destroying rivals on a cameo, performing the #blacklivesmatter anthem on top of a police car at the BET Awards, or hanging out with Obama. Fans took to social media and began posting what would be the physical copies of the release. It was confirmed on December 5th, that Kendrick Lamar would release this version according to a link briefly posted on Microsoft’s online store before being removed. You listen from the back end, and it’s almost the duality and the contrast of the intricate Kendrick Lamar. You know, ‘DNA.’ and exposing who I really am. The initial vibe listening from the top all the way to the bottom is…this aggression and this attitude. I don’t think the story necessarily changes, I think the feel changes. It’s something that we definitely premeditate while we’re in the studio. It’s one of my favorite rhythms and tempos within the album. It plays as a full story and even a better rhythm. I think like a week after the album came out, realized you can play the album backwards. The idea for the album was unveiled in an August 2017 interview with MTV News where Lamar revealed that the album was intended to be played in its original tracklist and in reverse. Although the album features no bonus tracks, it rather sports a new cover and a reversed tracklist.
